System Error to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival 2020!

GASP! Very, very excited to announce that the new short I directed, SYSTEM ERROR - featuring your friend and mine, George The Robot - will be having its world premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival in New York! This is a dream come true for this dumb, broken robot.

Every day, George works his job at a dingy convenience store, desperately hoping for a friend – but George is also an immobile robotic service unit, and immobile robotic service units do not have friends. Not yet, anyway.

The film stars comic genius David Quirk and Canada’s finest machine, the one, the only Nick Nemeroff. Massive thank yous to the entire cast and crew, especially producer Kirsty Stark and Exec Producer Sophie Hyde, and the teams at Closer Productions and Epic Films. Extreme gratitude as well to everyone at the South Australian Film Corporation for financing this film and supporting local filmmakers - just the best! And a big thank you as well to KOJO for their in-kind support.

New York here we comeeeeeee #Tribeca2020!

Debut Show at Adelaide Fringe 2019

Very excited to announce that I’ll be performing my debut full-length stand up show MATT VESELY AND GEORGE THE ROBOT PERFORM A VERY NORMAL STAND UP COMEDY ROUTINE at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2019 - and tix are on sale right now. It features my good pal George, aka CB-94/x017ab3982-2, from my upcoming film and TV project OVERHEATER.

Here’s the gist:

FUTURAMA meets the ADELAIDE FRINGE in a genre-bending sci-fi stand-up show like no other.

George works at a convenience store, but dreams of being a comedian. Unfortunately, George is a barely functional, immobile robot with a fatal system error, so he’s enlisted award-winning filmmaker and Adelaide comic Matt Vesely to help show him the ropes. It’s going to be very normal.

The show is at the National Wine Centre in Adelaide from Fri 15th - Mon 18th February 2019 at 6pm, and then Fri 22nd - Wed 27th February 2019 at 8:30pm. Pumped! Buy a ticket!

George came up with the show title, so please don’t make fun of it. He’s very sensitive.

Big thanks to Raynor Pettge for the design help, Robbs Props & Cosplay for the build, and Marcel, Ele and the whole team at Adelaide Fringe at the National Wine Centre. Also thanks to my muse, Nick Nemeroff.

See you in 2019!

Awards for MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING

Very excited to have won the Best Script award at The Heart of Gold International Film Festival in sunny Gympie in October! Thanks so much to the entire festival team - and, as always, to the cast and crew of MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING!

The film also won the GRAND PRIZE for Best Science Fiction Short Film at the 2017 Flickers' Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror Film Festival 2017 (Rhode Island) in October!

The film is finally wrapping up its festival run, and I'm hard at work on my next short. See you in 2018 with that one!

FUCKING ADELAIDE at Adelaide Film Festival!

Closer's new TV series FUCKING ADELAIDE will premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival this week! I wrote ep 4 of the show and was a staff writer across the series alongside Matt Cormack and Soph Hyde.

Commissioned by ABC and Screen Australia for their 'Long Story Short' initiative, FUCKING ADELAIDE is a six part television drama, directed by Sophie Hyde, produced by Sophie, Rebecca Summerton and Bryan Mason, and written by Matthew Cormack, with ep 4 written by Matt Vesely.

SYNOPSIS: A comedy drama told from six different perspectives of a family who reunite in Adelaide when mum plans to sell the family home. Any sense of togetherness quickly crumbles to reveal how fucked and glorious it is to be home. Starring Pamela Rabe, Kate Box, Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Brendan Maclean.

FUCKING ADELAIDE will have its TV premiere on ABC TV in early 2018!

Heading to MIFF!

Super excited to announce that MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING has been officially selected for the Melbourne International Film Festival!

We're playing on Aug 7 and Aug 14 as part of the Australian Shorts program (with radical friends Eddie White, Corrie Chan and Andrew Kavanagh amongst other great stuff!). I'll be heading over on the 7th so come along. Tix here.

MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING goes global!

It's been a while between updates, but I've been busy directing my newest short, MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING! You can see a trailer below:

MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING stars Tom Ward (PLEASE LIKE ME) and Erin James (THE LITTLE DEATH) and was produced by Sophie Hyde and Christine Williams at Closer Productions!

The film premiered at Adelaide Film Fest in 2015, and recently won Best Comedy and Best Screenplay at the SA Screen Awards. Now, it's all set to make its international debut at Palm Springs ShortFest in the coming weeks. Can't wait to get over there! It's gonna be hot!

Before that, we also head to Sydney Film Fest as we're a finalist in the Dendy Awards for best Australian short. Yeeha!

Thanks, as always, to the cast and crew, and to the film's supporters the South Australian Film Corporation, The Adelaide Film Festival, Kojo, Carclew, and Closer.

After that, I've got a few things bubbling away, including a feature and a TV project in development with Closer Productions which will be great to spill the beans on in the coming months.

Good times ahead - onwards and upwards! #gocrows

ANNOUNCEMENT: Welcome Dave!

The super radical David Keen, who made the feature image for Catharsis (which still blows my mind daily) got in touch recently and asked if I wanted to turn Catharsis into a collaborative project. The truth, of course, is that I'd secretly been wishing that would happen all along but I was too chicken to ask.

So, I'm now excited to announce that Dave is coming on board to contribute a piece of art for EVERY story, EVERY week, starting with four pieces for the four part story Homeward.

RADNESS

Dave is working independently of me, working off a draft version of each story. I'm now working one week ahead, so he's got 7 days to respond before I put the story up online. At this stage, we're not chatting about what I think the story means, or where I think images could go - it's a surprise to me, and therein lies the excitement of this collaboration. Can't wait to see what he comes up with!

New Website Live!

Excited to launch my new website. You're on it already. Carry on.

The dudes at Godel designed this and I am thankful for that. Thankyou, Godel.

Head on over to the Catharsis page to check out my new short story writing project, funded by the excellent folks at Carclew Youth Arts. It's also got some killer, killer art by Adelaide based artist David Keen who is a legend.

Time to celebrate:
