Apart from being an ardent emo kid, a fledgling stand up comedian and a failed actor, Matt Vesely is also an emerging South Australian writer and director.
Having completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts at Flinders University in 2007, Matt has since continued to hone his skills, making a number of successful low-budget shorts. 2009 saw Matt take part in the South Australian Film Corporation’s inaugural FilmLab Development Workshop with Stephen Cleary. THE THING ABOUT DOLPHINS, produced by Megan Huitema and Sarah MacDonald, was produced in 2010 as part of Matt’s ongoing development with FilmLab. DOLPHINS premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2011, was nominated for four SA Screen Awards, and played at the Shorts Film Festival, Byron Bay Film Festival, and Raindance Film Festival in London. In 2011, Matt entered development with the SAFC on his second feature screenplay, the surreal sci-fi-rom-com, LIVING OUT OF A SUITCASE.
In 2012 Matt won an award for Best Music Video at the SA Screen Awards. In 2013, he continued his development as a screenwriter, gaining work experience in television writing, as well as being part of the writing team for the ABC's flagship iView series, WASTELANDER PANDA.
In 2014, Matt was the recipient of the Colin Thiele Scholarship for Creative Writing, and won the Adelaide Comedy Award Rising Star Award for best new comedian. Matt’s latest short, MY BEST FRIEND IS STUCK ON THE CEILING, starring Tom Ward (PLEASE LIKE ME) and Erin James (THE LITTLE DEATH) and produced by Sophie Hyde, Christine Williams and Closer Productions, premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2015. It won Best Comedy and Best Screenplay at the 2016 SA Screen Awards, is a Finalist for the upcoming Dendy Awards at Sydney Film Festival, and will have its international premiere at the Palm Springs International ShortFest in June 2016.
Matt works as a producer's assistant at Closer Productions, which he considers to be a pretty rad gig. He worked as a script supervisor and production manager on Closer’s first dramatic feature, 52 TUESDAYS, and production managed the ABC arts series HANNAH GADSBY'S OZ and the Hive-funded short, I WANT TO DANCE BETTER AT PARTIES. He now works across Closer’s slate and services arm. As the third Matt at Closer, he’s now made life difficult for everyone.
As part of his 2014 scholarship, Matt’s undertook a year-long writing project with artist David Keen, which you can check out here.
